How to make bias biding tape

by - 22:49

I absolutely love bias tapes. For me it's the easiest way of finishing hems. I've bought a bias tape only once, and I was making them myself ever since. One of the reasons is that I afraid a cotton (which is my favourite) one may shrink after washing, and that would ruin the dress. And as for washing bias tape before using it... Em, not sure it's a good idea.
Especially because it's possible to make them in a minute, using a rotary cutter and a cutting mat. But if you don't have them, it's still possible to make a nice bias tape.

What fabric is the best choice for this task?

Any semi-heavy one is good. I usually use cotton. If you'd choose it too, don't forget to wash and spin it before cutting your bias tape.

What else do you need?

1) Tailor's chalk or a pencil
2) Dressmaker's scissors
3) Ruler
4) Set square 45

First of all you need to measure your hem line. Don't forget to add 2-3 cm to this measurement.
Now draw a 90 degrees angle on your fabric.

Use a set square to make a 45 degrees line out of the angle.

Using a ruler, draw parallel lines on both sides of that line. If you want to get a 1 cm wight tape, you need to draw 3 more lines (apart from the guiding line), 1 cm apart from each other.

It's also possible to draw just 3 lines, 2 cm apart from each other.

All you need to do now is to cut your bias tape and iron it.

Your perfect bias tape is ready!
